Copyright Notifications

How do copyright notifications happen:

We know that getting a copyright notification is a bit startling, but don’t worry, we’re here to help.

The algorithms that Facebook, YouTube and Instagram use to detect copyright infringers casts a wide net, and occasionally flags our tracks to double check that you have permission to use the music in your video.

As an Animoto subscriber, if you are using music from our song library, you absolutely do have permission to share your videos on social channels!

There are two common types of notifications, ones that remove your video from being posted to a social media channel at all, and ones that simply layer ads on top of your videos. You can dispute both, in the exact same way.

If you are using a song from the Animoto music library:

Dispute the notification! Let the service know that you do have permission to use the song in question and that you are using music directly from the Animoto licensed music library.

It’s very rare, but if you get a second notification about your song or your Facebook Page is blocked from posting video, please reach out to our team and let us know!

If you are using music you uploaded:

You should only dispute the notification if you are certain you have the rights to the song you uploaded into your video, e.g. a song purchased from iTunes gives you the right to listen to the song on any device you own, but doesn’t provide a license to use the song publicly. Not sure if you have the rights? Better to be safe than sorry! We recommend switching to a song from our music library, that way you’ll know for certain you are using licensed music.

What we’re doing to combat copyright notifications:

We know that the last thing you want to deal with when you are getting ready to share your video is a copyright notification. We’re working together with the social media platforms and our music licensors towards the end goal of you never even getting a notification. It’s an industry-wide challenge with a lot of working pieces, so hang in there with us while we continue to work through this one. We’ll add to this article with updates as we make progress.

What you can do to help us combat copyright notifications:

To help us ensure that we’re keeping an up-to-date list of music copyright notices, please contact our customer success team with the following information if you receive a copyright notification.

  • Have you already disputed the claim? Yes or No.
  • A link to your video
  • The title & artist of the song you received the notification for
  • The website that sent you the notification (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube)
  • The claimant for the notification. This is displayed only on YouTube copyright notifications. (Example: Ad Rev)
