General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Animoto

What is GDPR?

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) is a new comprehensive data protection law that becomes enforceable on May 25, 2018. GDPR is all about giving you greater transparency and control of your personal data online. It will be a single set of rules which regulate how organizations collect, use, and transfer the personal data of anyone located in the EU.

What kinds of personal data does Animoto collect and why?

During sign-up we collect identifying information about you like your name and email address. We use this data to give you a personalized experience on our website.

We also use tracking data to help us understand how you interact with our website, which helps us improve the Animoto experience.

How Animoto protects privacy under GDPR

The security of our customers and their data is always a priority at Animoto, so we’ve spent the past few months working with every team in the company to make sure we’re taking action on GDPR guidelines.

Here’s a few of the things we’re doing to prepare:

  • Making updates to our Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy
  • Keeping good records of our data collection processes and systems and investing in future upgrades and overhauls. This includes creating better internal documentation about our privacy and data protection measures.
  • Reviewing our contracts with current vendors and partners to make sure they are also GDPR compliant. Anytime we add a new vendor or partner in the future, we’ll make sure they’re compliant.
  • Assembling  an internal team to respond to privacy related concerns, including deletion requests.

I live in the EU. Is there anything specific I need to do for Animoto to help with GDPR?

If you haven't already, please review our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. From time to time, we may alert you of additional measures we’ve taken to clarify how we use your data and protect it. We’ll always ask you to review these types of messages when you when you log into Animoto and we’ll be sure to let you know if there are any actions we need you to take!

Will the GDPR apply to my business?

If you ever collect, record, store, use, or erase personal data from customers or contacts in the EU, the GDPR should be on your radar. Here’s a helpful resource to check out.

If any of your clients reach out to remove their data from your videos, reach out to the Animoto team for help. We’ll remove the relevant videos from your account and our databases. We’re exploring ways to make this easier in the future for all of our customers.
