My Video Won't Preview or Produce- Red Video Error (Animoto Memories - legacy tool)

Hi there! This article is about Animoto Memories, our original slideshow creation tool. As a company we've decided to focus our energy on making updates and improvements to our newest offering, Animoto 3. That just means there won’t be any new updates or changes to Animoto Memories going forward. If you love using Animoto Memories though, we will always be here to support you if you have any questions! Click here to learn more about Animoto Memories.

Occasionally, you may get a red error message when you try to finalize your Animoto Memories videos. This error can happen if one of your images (or video clips) is ‘bad’. “Bad” is subjective in this case as your images and video clips may look fine, but they may be encoded in such a way that prevents our system from processing it.

The first step is to try changing the song, especially if you are editing or working on a copy of an older video. If that doesn’t work, we'll need to do some trial and error to narrow down which asset is the root of this. The way to test it is to first select approximately half of the tiles and move them to the ‘overflow tray’ on the right. These tiles won’t be in your video any longer, so you can try previewing again without them.

To quickly move a group of tiles to the overflow tray:

-Click on the first tile, hold Shift on your keyboard, then select the last tile in the group
-Drag the tiles to the overflow tray on the right

If that preview worked, then you know that the bad asset is one of the images or video clips in the overflow tray. Next, select everything in the tray and drag it back to the project. Then select all the tiles that WERE in the project and drag them to the overflow tray. Try previewing again.

If it the video preview didn’t work, then you know the bad asset is currently in your project. We'll use the same process to pinpoint which image or clip in that group it is. Select around half of the tiles from that group and drag them out to the overflow tray. Try previewing again.

If previewing works, put back the tiles you just removed from the project and try again. If previewing fails, remove another half of the tiles in the project and try again. Once you have identified the faulty asset, you can try converting it to another accepted file type before producing again.

If none of those options work, you may need to choose another song file. This usually happens if you are editing an old project whose music license has expired. If you are using your own track, you can try converting it to another accepted file type before producing again.

You can find more instructions and resources about converting files in this article.
